Thrilled Against My Will

From guitar/vocalist in Toronto's premiere R&B band The Lincolns, to composer for the Carol Shields play Thirteen Hands. Lowe has written and produced music for theatre, radio dramas, television and film as well as performing at major Canadian jazz festivals. As much a composer as a player, Lowe has had works performed and broadcast by The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra at their New Music Festivals.

Adding to his list of accomplishments, Lowe has also studied jazz harmony with modern guitar greats John Scotland, John Abercrombe and Steve Khan. These experiences complimented by Lowe’s talents, have enriched Lowe's approach to jazz, providing a fresh influence on his second JAZZ INSPIRATION Record release, Thrilled Against My Will.

Thrilled Against My Will, reveals a variety of influences from Lowe’s early days of admiring Jeff Beck and Carlos Santana, to his later mentors Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Lee Ritenour and Larry Carlton. Adding to the excitement on this new recording is newcomer vocalist Jennifer Hanson. Greg is excited to add her sensuous voice to his compositional depth on the album’s lead-off single "Pretty Blue".

Greg Lowe

GREG LOWE has enjoyed a diverse musical background. Born in Kenora, Ontario in 1957 and now living happily in Winnipeg, LOWE took up the guitar at the age of eleven. While at first a self-described "rock'n'roller", he was introduced to jazz seven years later by his father, a multi-instrumentalist. As LOWE remembers, "the more I learned about jazz, the less interesting other forms of music became. Its complexity is only the half of it. Jazz has such interesting melodies and harmonies if you listen for them."

A firm believer, LOWE has studied jazz harmony with modern guitar greats John Scofield, John Abercrombe and Steve Khan. In addition to writing, performing and recording, LOWE is Director of the Guitar Program at the Professional Musicians College in Winnipeg.

LOWE now considers himself as much a composer as a player. He has been commissioned to write jazz and classical music for various Winnipeg cultural institutions such as the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, broadcast nationally on the CBC. GREG explains that this allows him to "focus in on my writing side. I am also receiving commissions for film scores, theatre and new music for strings and orchestra."

In 1990, LOWE's determination led him to record and distribute his independent release THE ART OF BENDING, which showcases his talents as a jazz guitarist in the tradition of Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Lee Ritenour and Larry Carlton. A local Toronto deejay championed the cause, and LOWE was shortly signed to JAZZ INSPIRATION Records. Excited about LOWE's skills as a composer and a player, JAZZ INSPIRATION chose some of LOWE"s best compositions from a vast unrecorded repertoire. A Toronto recording session was planned with some other top musicians in the JAZZ INSPIRATION family; bassist Michael Farquharson and drummer Vito Rezza. The results along with some previous tracks recorded in Winnipeg are highlighted on this second release, GREG LOWE.
