Thompson creates a nostalgic atmosphere which is both surprising and welcome.
Jazz Times

Montreal guitarist/vocalist Dawn Thompson could have made a career as a model. Luckily for us, she continued with her musical avocation. Lady guitarists are rare in jazz; lady guitarists who can really play are unheard of and the only other example of the genre was Concord recording artist, Emily Remler, who was also Dawn’s teacher and mentor.

Dawn believes in keeping music in the family. She has written and performed with her sister Shannon, flautist in the quintet SUCH SWEET THUNDER, whose concerts have been broadcast nationally. She has also performed in major festivals and studied with well known jazz artists, as pianist Oliver Jones, trumpeter Charles Ellison, bassist/pianist/vibist Don Thompson, trumpeter Kenny Wheeler and bassists Dave Holland and Rufus Reid.

Though hard work in a field most traditionally pursued by women musicians, Thompson has already earned a great deal of respect as a player, composer and arranger. A graduate of the jazz program at Concordia University in Montreal, she has successfully tackled the task of arranging for a complicated twelve piece jazz orchestra. She is currently living in New York and playing throughout the United States.

Dawn’s JAZZ INSPIRATION debut The Best Things In Life is a beautiful delicate and sensitive interpretation of jazz standards and originals, which signifies the emergence of an artist with major potential. This album is a fulfilling showcase for Thompson’s haunting vocals and fresh creative guitar solos. Dawn is ably assisted by bassist Pat Collins, drummer Jerry Fuller, pianist Don Thompson (who also contributes a composition to the album) and fellow JAZZ INSPIRATION label saxophonist John Nugent.

With a sweetness of vocal style, assertiveness in instrumental approach, and pristine fully digital production featuring 20 bit technology, Dawn Thompson’s The Best Things In Life is sure to catch both your ear and your heart.
